What the Insulin Pump Program covers

Saskatchewan’s Insulin Pump Program is administered through the Drug Plan / Extended Benefits branch and the SAIL (Saskatchewan Aids to Independent Living) Program, aiming to reduce cost barriers for people with Type 1 diabetes. By providing funding for both devices and supplies, the program makes insulin pump therapy more accessible and sustainable for those who qualify.

Insulin Pumps

  • The program provides a grant of up to $6,300 toward the cost of one insulin pump every five years for eligible individuals.
  • As of changes announced in 2021, coverage is no longer restricted by age. People of all ages with Type 1 diabetes who meet medical criteria are eligible.
  • The pump must be obtained through the program’s process via approved clinics and providers.

Pump Supplies

  • The cost of insulin pump supplies such as infusion sets, reservoirs, and cartridges is eligible for coverage, but how much you pay depends on your existing Drug Plan or SAIL coverage, including deductibles and co-payments.
  • Because of that, individuals may have out-of-pocket costs for supplies, especially if they exceed coverage limits or deductibles.

This combination of a device grant plus partial supply support helps make pump therapy more accessible, although it may not eliminate all ongoing costs.

Who is eligible

To participate in Saskatchewan’s Insulin Pump Program, you need to meet both residency and medical criteria. Some of the requirements are:

  • Be a Saskatchewan resident with a valid Saskatchewan Health Card.
  • Have a diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes and be under the care of a diabetes specialist or a diabetes education program.
  • Undergo assessment by a Saskatchewan Health Authority diabetes education program or authorized clinician.
  • For children under 18, applications must go through the pediatric diabetes education program or an authorized pediatric specialist.
  • Meet the medical criteria outlined in the provincial Insulin Pump Program Medical Criteria document.

Because the program used to have an age restriction (up to age 25) but was expanded, applicants should review the updated eligibility rules.

Coverage details and approved pumps

Saskatchewan’s public information does not explicitly list which pump makes and models are eligible in the same way as some other provinces. However, the following are known:

  • The grant of up to $6,300 is intended to cover the approved pump cost under the program.
  • When applying, the program review ensures the device meets safety, clinical, and vendor/provider criteria.
  • If you already own a pump not funded under the program, you may still qualify under certain pathways, but you must meet full eligibility and medical criteria.

Support beyond funding

The Insulin Pump Program ensures the cost of the pump device is addressed, and part of supply costs may be supported, but many people still face daily challenges with diabetes management. That is where additional support can make a real difference.

  • Clinician access when you need it: The Endor Health app allows ongoing communication with your care team, so questions about therapy or adjustments do not have to wait for the next appointment.
  • Reliable supply delivery: The Endor Health app makes it easy and free to get home delivery of insulin, prescription items and pump supplies, reducing the risk of missed refills or last-minute pharmacy visits.
