What is the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus?

The FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensor is Abbott's latest generation sensor within the FreeStyle Libre 3 system. The system enables real-time glucose readings on a compatible smartphone or reader, without routine fingersticks. The sensor is small and discreet, worn on the back of the upper arm for up to 15 days, and offers continuous insight into glucose trends and patterns.

Who may be eligible for ODB coverage?

You may be eligible for coverage for the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus system if: 

• You have diabetes that you manage with insulin
• You qualify for the Ontario Drug Benefit program
• You have a valid prescription for the FreeStyle Libre 3 system from a physician or nurse practitioner

People may qualify for the ODB program if they are: 

• 65 years of age or older
• Living in a long-term care home, home for special care, or community home for opportunity 24 years of age or younger and not covered by a private insurance plan
• Receiving professional home and community care services
• Receiving benefits from Ontario Works (OW) or the Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) Enrolled in the Trillium Drug Program

The issue involves the potential for incorrect low glucose readings in specific lots. Users in Canada are advised to check their sensor serial numbers at freestylecheck.com and follow the instructions provided. This notice does not change ODB coverage eligibility but is important for anyone currently using the system or planning to start.
