What changed
Under the previous rules at Manulife and Sun Life, only plan members using insulin qualified for Dexcom G7 coverage. Members managing their diabetes with oral medications or non-insulin injectables were not eligible. The expanded eligibility now extends coverage to any plan member with diabetes using at least one anti-hyperglycemic medication.
That includes:
- Oral diabetes medications
- Non-insulin injectables
- Insulin (any type, delivered by injection or pump)

How approval works
Both insurers have automated the eligibility check at the pharmacy point-of-sale. When a member submits a Dexcom G7 claim through their drug benefit card, the insurer's system reviews the member's claims history for a qualifying diabetes medication. If one is found, the claim is approved automatically.
That means no forms and no prior authorization. Members just bring their prescription to the pharmacy and have the claim processed at the counter.
One important caveat: not all group plans within Manulife and Sun Life have adopted the expanded coverage. Adoption varies by employer, since each plan sponsor decides which benefits to include. The most reliable way to confirm coverage is to submit a claim at the pharmacy and see whether it's approved.
The wider Canadian landscape
Manulife and Sun Life join a growing list of private insurers covering Dexcom G7 for plan members on any diabetes medication. The table below summarizes Dexcom G7 private insurance coverage across Canada, based on Dexcom Canada's published coverage grid as of March 31, 2026. Eligibility tiers are defined as follows:
- Diabetes: Any plan member with diabetes using oral medications, injectables, or insulin
- Any Insulin: Plan members using any basal or bolus insulin, by injection or pump
- MDI Insulin: Plan members using both basal and bolus insulin, by injection or pump
- T1D: Plan members with documented Type 1 diabetes
The approval process also varies by insurer. Most allow pay-direct claims at the pharmacy, while a few require members to pay upfront and submit a manual claim for reimbursement. Some insurers also require prior authorization before claims will be approved.

What to do next
If you have a Manulife or Sun Life plan and take a diabetes medication, an easy way to find out if you qualify is to send your prescription to Endor Health. We'll run the claim through your benefits, confirm your coverage, and ship your supplies straight to your door, all without a trip to the pharmacy. If you don't have a prescription yet, your family doctor, endocrinologist, or a prescribing pharmacist can write one for Dexcom G7. In BC and Alberta, our pharmacists have authority to prescribe for diabetes management, which is often the fastest route.
If your claim isn't approved, it usually means your specific employer plan hasn't adopted the expanded coverage, or your recent medication history doesn't show a qualifying claim. Our team can walk through the reason and what to do next, including provincial coverage options and the Dexcom Patient Benefit Program, which can help reduce out-of-pocket costs for members whose plans aren't yet covered.
